Samsung Launches New AI Programme in Nepal, But Questions Remain Over Jobs and Long-Term Impact

KATHMANDU, Samsung Nepal has announced the completion of its Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) Coding & Programming course and launched applications for a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) programme, positioning the initiative as a step toward building Nepal’s digital workforce. However, the announcement has also raised questions about the programme’s measurable impact and its contribution to employment.

While Samsung highlighted the graduation of participants from its Coding & Programming course, the company did not disclose how many students secured jobs, internships, or entrepreneurial opportunities after completing the programme. No employment rate or independent assessment of the programme’s outcomes was included in the announcement.

Samsung said the new AI course is designed to equip young people with practical skills for the emerging digital economy. However, industry observers note that training alone does not guarantee employment, particularly in Nepal, where the technology sector continues to face limited job creation and investment.

The company also announced plans to establish a Samsung Innovation Campus Alumni Network and provide mentorship through Samsung employees and industry experts. However, details regarding the implementation timeline, funding, participant selection, or expected outcomes of these initiatives have not yet been made public.

Samsung further emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among academia, industry, and government to develop Nepal’s AI ecosystem. Analysts say such collaboration is indeed essential but argue that it must be accompanied by sustained investment, research opportunities, startup support, and stronger industry demand to produce meaningful economic benefits.

Experts also point out that many corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives focus heavily on training and certification but provide limited evidence of long-term success, such as graduate employment, business creation, or continued engagement with participants.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important across industries, observers say programmes like Samsung Innovation Campus could play a valuable role in developing digital talent. However, they stress that their effectiveness should ultimately be measured by tangible outcomes—including employment, innovation, and career advancement—rather than by graduation ceremonies or programme announcements alone.

Samsung Nepal has not publicly released independent data evaluating the long-term impact of its Innovation Campus programmes in Nepal.
