Kathmandu: The launch of a 180ml bottle of The Governor Smokewood Cask Whisky by Sagar Distillery Limited has raised concerns among public health advocates and social observers regarding increased accessibility to alcoholic beverages.
While the company says the smaller pack offers consumers a more convenient and affordable option, critics argue that compact-sized alcohol packaging can encourage impulse consumption and widen access among youth and low-income groups. At a time when Nepal continues to grapple with alcohol-related health issues, domestic violence cases, and road accidents, the move has prompted questions about corporate responsibility.
Health professionals warn that smaller bottles often promote “single-occasion drinking,” increasing the likelihood of alcohol use in public spaces and during late-night hours. The 180ml pack, priced at Rs. 745, may lower the psychological barrier to consumption despite its premium branding.
Although Sagar Distillery has emphasized craftsmanship and quality—highlighting the use of aged Highland and Speyside Scotch malts—experts argue that product positioning should not overlook broader social consequences. “The issue is not the quality of the alcohol, but the impact of expanding availability in a society already facing alcohol-related challenges,” one public health analyst noted.
Nepal lacks strong enforcement mechanisms on alcohol regulation, and social workers fear that such product expansions could undermine efforts aimed at reducing addiction, especially among younger demographics.
While the company maintains that the launch is aimed at evolving consumer preferences, the introduction of smaller, more accessible alcohol packaging has reopened debate on whether stricter regulation and ethical considerations should accompany market expansion in Nepal’s spirits industry.
